The Process: Treatment Progression and Goals

Unless there exists an emergency, (defined as: needs to be treated immediately) new patients will be scheduled with the Doctor for a thorough examination, collecting data for clinical records and planning. Information may include, but not be limited to:
    • medical history review
    • charting of existing dental work and defects
    • oral cancer screening
    • panoramic screening radiograph for teeth, bone, TMJ
    • sinus and carotid artery (stroke) evaluation
    • laser diagnostics (non-radiation decay analysis; cracked tooth evaluation)
    • nerve testing
    • cosmetics, etc…
An initial assessment of gum disease activity will then allow us to make plans relative to any engineering (tooth and bite reconstruction) and cosmetic issues which may need to be addressed. Engineering is relatively easy.

The other, and more significant, broad area we as healthcare specialists must address is infection management (the cause of damage and a major factor in overall health). This brings us to the next appointment, with the Hygiene department. The initial evaluation allowed us to plan for this session. Included here will be some review and further development of previous data and extensive diagnostic evaluation of the status of any chronic and/or acute oral infections (gum disease).

We employ a number of techniques to characterize the level and extent of germ activity. Thermal and biochemical probes, microscope examination of your germ samples, and other methods, can show you directly what problems exist. This will be a critical planning appointment; it rarely involves manual "cleaning" procedures, except in the most disease-free cases.

What will be developed is a detailed plan for stopping and controlling disease, and, hopefully, beginning the healing process. Included will be recommendations for a self-care (at-home) program based on antimicrobial principles. Information may be offered about diet, nutrition and vitamin/mineral/herbal supplements, aimed toward improving the ability of your immune systems to help fight the problems.
